Shorts don't work quite like regular videos, but they do have downloadable cover images. Here's how to grab one.
YouTube Shorts use the same underlying video infrastructure as regular uploads, which means every Short still gets a set of auto-generated thumbnail images at youtube.com's image CDN — you just need a tool that recognizes the /shorts/ URL format.
Why Shorts thumbnails look different
Because Shorts are filmed vertically, their auto-generated thumbnails are often a center-cropped or letterboxed version of the same 16:9 frame used for regular videos, rather than a true 9:16 image. What you actually get back depends on how YouTube processed that specific upload.
Step-by-step
- Open the Short and tap Share → Copy Link. The link will look like youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID.
