YouTube Thumbnail File Size Explained
How big YouTube thumbnail files actually are, and what limits apply when you're uploading your own.
"File size" and "resolution" are related but different things: resolution is the pixel dimensions, file size is how many kilobytes that image takes up on disk after compression.
Typical downloaded file sizes
Auto-generated thumbnails are JPGs compressed by YouTube for fast loading, so they're small: maxresdefault.jpg is typically well under 200KB despite being 1280×720, and the smaller sizes are correspondingly lighter. Exact size varies per video depending on visual complexity.
Upload limits for custom thumbnails
If you're uploading your own thumbnail to a video you own, YouTube enforces a 2MB maximum file size, alongside the 640px minimum width and 16:9 recommendation covered in our dimensions guide.
Why smaller files usually look just as good
JPG compression removes visual information a viewer is unlikely to notice at normal viewing sizes. For a thumbnail — which is displayed small, in a scrolling feed — a well-compressed 150KB file and an uncompressed 3MB file will often look identical on screen, so there's rarely a reason to upload an unnecessarily large file.
